A frown settled over his features as he turned to survey my hut.
“This is unacceptable,” he told me with a haughty demeanor. “A mile up the beach, turn inland. My home is there, which is where you will tend to me.” With that statement, he leaped into the air and flew off.
Thankful he didn’t roast and eat me as soon as he met me, I turned to make my way to the dragon’s lair. So I turned in the direction he indicated and began walking to my new life as the servant of an over-sized scaly lizard.
Mumbling to myself, I walked the sandy shore. I admit I didn’t want to attend anyone. Still, I couldn’t tell where I had much in the way of options, which consisted of serving or dying. Neither appealed but servitude was a bit better better.
So I trudged along, taking my time. My master didn’t give me a specified time. The only thing he told me was to show up for work. Therefore, I surmised he didn’t care. Then again, I couldn’t be sure of that so I picked up my pace a little. In any case, I didn’t want to be toasted before I started my job.
The dragon’s lair resembled a dragon-sized keep, which surprised me. Don’t ask me why, but I rather expected a cave. At least the sun was going down, which meant its light shone at my back as I approached the citadel. The closer I got, the more it shrunk to the size for a man such as myself. I confess it confused me. Soon, my feet thudded on the drawbridge and the gates swung open.
“Come in.” The tall, scaly creature stood inside. “Well, you took your time coming.” Startled, I glanced at him. Somehow, he didn’t appear so frightening now.
“Sorry,” I said. “But, I came as quick as I could.” To my surprise, he chuckled.
“Somehow, I doubt that,” he said. “Are you aware of the change? Are you not different?” Now he mentioned it, I did feel a bit strange. Standing in the doorway, I stifled a serious yawn. The past couple of days were hard on me and I got little sleep.
A little annoyed, I stepped further into the keep of the castle. The dragon cocked his head. “The memories haven’t returned yet.” With no warning, he showed his jagged teeth in a smile. “Not to worry, they will soon.”
“What?” All my feet hurt, didn’t he understand? Wait. Alarmed, I glanced down to realize I had four feet. A sense of movement on my back made me peer over my shoulder. My tail, in the literal sense, dragged on the ground. “Wait, I, I’m a dragon?” My shock made him laugh loud and hearty.
“Indeed, you are, Tiernan,” he smiled. “What do you remember?” Barely listening to him, I struggled to cope as memory cascaded over me. First came my childhood and progressed up to the day I left home to study humankind. Blinking rapidly I struggled to bring tears to soothe dry eyes. The dragon, no, my father grinned at me.
“Welcome home, my son.”
“It’s wonderful to be home, Father.”
