Give Yourself A Break

Give yourself a break. What do I mean about that? That’s an idea. What do I mean by giving myself a break? You can’t think of what? You’re right. You give yourself a break. Take a break from your writing, walk away from it. I’m not saying for long. A few minutes even will help. Stepping away from you work can make it easier to figure out what you want to do with it. It may even make it so that you know or can determine where you are going. Taking a break can help you look at it with fresh eyes. To do that, you must distance yourself from it. And that is exactly what I mean by giving yourself a break.

Only you will know if it works for you. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. The point is, you won’t know until you try it. So go ahead and give yourself a break. Walk away from what you’re writing or working on. Go watch TV, read a book. Go for a walk. Or sit in silence and meditate.

Sometimes that’s pretty much all you can do. Give yourself a break. A lot of times what happens is you put so much pressure on yourself that you screwed up. Pressure is what keeps you from writing. Or it is what you need to do. Getting out for a walk has a twofold benefit. One, it’s good for your body to get out and move. 2. It gets you away from the work that you’re trying to do. It also gives you a chance to actually do that work. And that can make all the difference in the world.

The second benefit is that it gets you away from your work and lets you clear your head. So, take a break and go out for a walk. Listen to the birds sing. Watch the trees dancing around you. Then go back and try again. You might find that you found your way through then whatever was blocking you. That’s good. Sometimes you won’t, but that’s , that’s life . You need to figure out what’s going on and try to fix it. Other times you’re blocked because you’re not well. Take care of yourself. That’s more important than anything else. Don’t let anybody tell you it’s selfish to take care of yourself, because it isn’t. It’s not the least bit selfish.

All too often we fail to take care of ourselves because we’re so busy doing other things. You take your car in for great regular maintenance because you don’t want it to break down. The same should be true for your body. I’m not saying you must go to the doctor if you don’t want to, but it can’t hurt. But you do need to get away from your desk every now and then. Move. It can help. Whether you think so or not, it’s true. Give it a try. You have better chances of getting things done. get out and go for a walk.
