Shades Of Meaning

Words have definitions. Some have only one definition while others have several. Yet, words also have connotations. These connotations are the flavor or hue of the word. The connotation of a particular word can have an impact on how your readers see the meaning of your word choice. That’s why word choice is so important.

Connotation is definitely something you need to take into consideration when writing. Use whatever word comes to mind when you are writing the first draft. In revision, make sure the connotation of each word matches what you mean. That is, read each word as you revise the piece. For example make sure the word you are using has the connotation that fits the context. Connotations can be positive, negative, or neutral.

You want to attach the right emotions to the word you use. This helps make your writing more powerful. Consider the words group, club, and clique. Each of them means a gathering of people. A group could mean random people gathered together. It has a neutral connotation. A club indicates a group of people who have a shared interest. It’s a positive connotation. A clique is an exclusive group of people. It has a slight negative connotation.

Anyone can join a group. It’s completely informal and inclusive. A club is less so. Anyone who shares the interest of the others can join, but it’s a more formal process to join. A clique is hard to join. A clique will not accept everyone who wants in. It’s exclusive. The traits for joining are more designed with keeping people out than welcoming them in.

Be sure you understand the connotation as well as the meanings of the words you choose to use in your writing. You will avoid offending readers when you did not intend to offend.

Connotation can be tricky. Going back to my group of people example, there’s another word to describe a group of people and that’s the word gang. This carries a very negative connotation. A gang is a group of people believed to be violent criminals. That’s the connotation of the word. The word itself is a description of a group of people.

So remember to think about what emotions come up when you think of a particular word before you use it. Does it fit the tone of the piece you are writing? Will it offend anyone? What is your intent in using the word?

Word choice is important and often difficult. Choosing the correct word to use means knowing what emotions you want to stir in your readers. Do that well, and you are golden. Do it poorly, and you will lose readers. Take your time and consider the connotations in your words. That will make all the difference. Good luck and keep writing.
