I’ve been thinking about this situation in which we find ourselves. Here’s what I’ve come up with.
I think 2020 has been a test for humanity. It’s a test we failed. All we needed to do was respect one another, social distance and wear masks. We couldn’t even do the last one with any consistency. How pathetic can humans be?
We were hit by a pandemic. Some groups handled it well. Others, not so much. We in the United States should have been one of the groups that handled it best. Instead, we are one of the worst. We rioted. We protested. We refused to social distance. We even refused to wear masks. We claimed we had the right to not wear masks.
I guess that’s true. We have the right to go mask less, but we also have the responsibility to protect our fellow citizens by wearing masks.
We have rights but we also have responsibilities. They go hand in hand. By accepting social protections, we accepted that some of our personal freedoms had to make way for those of others. Sometimes those freedoms clash. That’s what the courts are for.
Wearing a mask is a small sacrifice. Apparently it was too big a sacrifice for some people. Our federal leadership failed us. That’s the sum total of it.
If the federal government had appeared to take the pandemic seriously, things would have been different. The lunatic fringe would have remained the lunatic fringe. Instead a large number of people failed to realize how serious the pandemic is. As a result over two hundred thousand Americans died.
They didn’t have to. 2020 was a test. We failed that test. All we needed to do to pass it, was respect each other and wear a mask.
