Winter

Winter is a cold time. It’s the season of snow and ice. The days are usually gray and dull. There’s little color. Some people like it. As you may have guessed, I really don’t. It’s not my favorite time of year. I hate being cold. Snow is only pretty right after it falls. Then it’s a nuisance. You have to move it off your driveway and sidewalks or you will slip in it. Yes, it’s slippery.

There are things that you can do with snow and ice. You can slide down hills on snow, build snow people, and have snowball fights. I went down a hill on a toboggan as a kid, and learned an important lesson. One person cannot control a toboggan. I didn’t have the weight. I would have been better off on a sled. I would likely have been able to avoid the tree, if I had been on a sled. Instead, I hit it, broadside. I wasn’t seriously injured, but it rather put me off the sport of sledding for a while. I can’t recall going sledding after that, although I probably did. It just doesn’t stand out like hitting a tree does.

I fell while learning to ice skate. The old adage about ice being the hardest thing about learning to skate is true. I pinched a nerve in my shoulder. If you’ve ever pinched a nerve, you will understand that I was in pain. We thought I’d broken my collarbone but I hadn’t. I never did learn to ice skate well. I just remind myself that ice sunk the Titanic.

As I sit here, writing this blog, I realize that I have been remarkably clumsy and easily discouraged in terms of winter sports. I also realize that I was an active child. Now I struggle to be active as an adult. What happened to that active child? Somehow, I turned into a couch potato. I’m not sure how that happened, but I got lazy.

I also do my best to avoid being cold. I can stand the heat of summer, but the cold of winter – I don’t like it. Cold and wet has to be the worst feeling ever. I hate being cold and wet. I love swimming in the summer, but don’t do it much. I don’t have a pool for one thing. For another, I don’t have a place where I can go to swim regularly. Oh, some members of my family have places on a lake, but it’s an hour and a half drive to get there and I often can’t do it because I have to work. The weekends in the summer, I have to cram the chores in that I can’t do during the week. For that matter, I have chores that I have to do in the winter as well.

As I said, winter is a cold, dreary time. I don’t like it much. Some days, when the sun is shining, it is a pretty time when the snow is new, but it gets old very fast. Then you have to think about shoveling snow off the driveway. No, winter is not my favorite time of year. You may have a different view of it.

About

I am not one who is comfortable talking about myself but here goes. I enjoy writing, family history, and reading. I decided to do this blog because I wanted to try something new. I decided to make it a weekly blog because I wasn't sure that I could keep up with a daily one, and monthly seemed like I was writing a magazine. I think I did ok with my choices. You'll notice that there are not a lot of graphics on my site. That's because there are graphics plastered everywhere on the Internet and those sites sometimes take forever to load. This blog is a place where you can kick back, relax and be ready to be amused. At least I hope I willbamuse you. This blog is on a variety of subjects from my ficitional cat agency, the FFL, which is monthly, to instructional blogs to editorials, which are my opinions only. I admit that I don't know everything and could be wrong -- I frequently am. Now, stop reading about me and read what I have to say!
